Celebrate a petalled paradise near you!

Whether you go out wandering, spend some time looking through a lens, or even just lie with your hands outstretched, it’s time to appreciate one of the most fabulous UK habitats – the petalled paradise that is a meadow in high summer!

On 7th July it is National Meadows Day, an annual event for people to celebrate these habitats in their own city, village, parish, wildlife reserve, allotment or farm all over the UK.

In 2017, thousands of people took part in National Meadows Day events, celebrating wildflower grasslands with guided walks, wildlife hunts, arts & crafts, training workshops and more. And, this year there are a whole host of activities happening again across the UK. From orchid hunts to scything workshops there is something to appeal to everyone!

In case you needed a reminder, here are some reasons why we need to celebrate our magnificent meadows:

  • Since the Second World War we have lost 97% of wildflower meadow habitats across the UK: that’s an area one and half times the size of Wales!
  • Meadows are important and crucial habitats, a single healthy meadow can be home to more than 80 species of wild flowers, supporting a myriad of insects, small animals and birds.
  • Meadows also help in mitigating the impact of floods and capture carbon!
  • Meadow habitats are integral to ensuring a sustainable environmental future.

So, get out and feel the buzz!

Plantlife has been at the forefront of saving, restoring and creating meadows; between 2014 and 2017, Plantlife led the Save Our Magnificent Meadows partnership that successfully enhanced over 9000 ha of meadow and grassland.
